FAQ

What is the barracuda tornado?

Thousands of chevron barracuda form a massive spiraling vortex — one of the most iconic images in diving.

How do I get a Sipadan permit?

Only 120 diving permits issued per day. Book through Mabul/Kapalai-based resorts months in advance.

What else can I see?

Bumphead parrotfish in schools of 50+, whitetip reef sharks, eagle rays, and green sea turtles on every dive.

How large is the barracuda school?

The resident school of chevron barracuda at Barracuda Point typically numbers several thousand individuals. They form a swirling vortex (often called a 'tornado') that is one of the most photographed underwater spectacles in the world.

Do you need a permit to dive Sipadan?

Yes. Sipadan Island allows only 120 divers per day, and permits must be arranged through licensed operators based on Mabul or Kapalai islands. It is advisable to book well in advance.
