Kapalai Mandarin Fish Point

Kapalai Mandarin Fish Point is a unique dive site located off the stilt resort of Kapalai, a sandbar between Sipadan and Mabul in the Celebes Sea. This shallow, rubble-strewn site is unremarkable in appearance but hosts one of the most enchanting natural displays in the underwater world: the nightly mating dance of mandarin fish. As the sun begins to set, divers descend to the rubble field at just 5 to 10 metres depth and position themselves near known mandarin fish territories. The tiny, brilliantly coloured fish — arguably the most beautiful fish in the ocean, with their psychedelic patterns of blue, orange, and green — begin to emerge from the rubble. Males display to females with flared fins, chasing rivals away from their chosen partners. The climax comes when a receptive female rises from the rubble alongside a male. The pair ascend together in a brief, spiralling dance, releasing eggs and sperm at the peak before darting back into cover. The entire display lasts mere seconds, but witnessing it is a privilege that leaves a lasting impression. Multiple pairs may perform simultaneously across the site. Beyond the mandarin fish display, the rubble field supports a rich macro ecosystem. Nudibranchs, seahorses, ghost pipefish, and various crustaceans provide additional subjects for the observant diver. The shallow depth and absence of current make this an ideal dive for all skill levels, though the dusk timing means that good torchwork and comfortable night diving skills enhance the experience. It is a dive that proves emphatically that small and beautiful can be every bit as rewarding as big and dramatic.
