FAQ
What certification is needed for Batu Bolong?
Advanced Open Water is essential. Batu Bolong has very strong and changeable currents that can create downcurrents and upwellings. It is one of the most current-intensive dives in Komodo. Only experienced drift divers should attempt it.
When is the best time to dive Batu Bolong?
April to November is the main diving season in Komodo, with the best visibility (15–30 meters). The site is diveable year-round, but December to March can bring reduced visibility and more challenging conditions.
What makes Batu Bolong the best dive in Komodo?
Batu Bolong is a tiny rock pinnacle rising from deep water in the strait between Komodo and Rinca islands. The powerful currents that rip through the strait concentrate an extraordinary density of marine life on this single small rock — from sharks and mantas to walls of anthias and trevally.
How strong are the currents?
Very strong — this is an advanced dive. Negative entry and reef hooking may be necessary. Only dive with experienced Komodo operators.
What marine life is here?
Grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, schools of giant trevally forming tornadoes, Napoleon wrasse, and eagle rays.
