Manta Alley

Labuan Bajo · Komodo · Indonesia

Manta Alley in southern Komodo is one of Indonesia's premier manta ray encounter sites, a shallow channel between rocky outcrops where oceanic and reef manta rays gather in extraordinary numbers to feed on plankton-rich currents. During the peak season from December to March, the southern waters of Komodo National Park become turbid with plankton blooms, and manta rays — sometimes dozens at a time — converge on Manta Alley to feed. The feeding behaviour is spectacular: mantas swim in long loops through the channel with their mouths wide open, sometimes barrel-rolling to concentrate the plankton, sometimes forming feeding trains of multiple individuals swimming nose to tail. The shallow depth of 10–20 metres means encounters happen at close range, and the mantas' focus on feeding means they often pass within arm's reach of stationary divers. Visibility during manta season can be reduced by the plankton itself — ironically, the poor visibility is what attracts the mantas in the first place. On days when the plankton is thick, the water may have a green tinge and visibility may drop to 5–10 metres, but the proximity of the mantas more than compensates. Between feeding passes, reef sharks and eagle rays cruise the channel, and giant trevally hunt along the rock edges. Manta Alley requires patience and good positioning — experienced guides know where the mantas prefer to feed and will position divers accordingly. The site is a must for any diver visiting Komodo during the wet season.

FAQ

When is the best time to dive Manta Alley?

December to March is peak manta season at Manta Alley, when plankton-rich waters from the south attract large feeding aggregations. Outside this window, manta encounters are less reliable but still possible.

What certification do I need to dive Manta Alley?

Advanced Open Water is recommended. While the site is shallow, moderate currents and the need to position yourself correctly relative to feeding mantas require some diving experience and good buoyancy control.

What marine life can I expect at Manta Alley?

The main attraction is manta rays — sometimes dozens feeding simultaneously in the plankton-rich waters. Reef sharks, eagle rays, and giant trevally also frequent the area, along with a variety of reef fish.
