Batu Bolong

Batu Bolong is widely considered the best dive site in Komodo National Park and one of the finest in Indonesia. This tiny rock pinnacle barely breaks the surface in the strait between Komodo and Rinca islands, where powerful tidal currents funnel through the channel. The rock drops vertically on all sides to 40+ meters, and every square centimeter of its surface is covered in life. The current-exposed northern face hosts clouds of anthias so dense they create a living orange curtain. Napoleon wrasse — some of enormous size — patrol the wall, and whitetip reef sharks rest on ledges before launching into the current to hunt. Giant trevally charge through schooling fish in explosive attacks, and mantas occasionally sweep past in the blue. The rock's small size means the entire site can be explored in a single dive, but the current determines which face is accessible. Experienced guides read the tidal flow and position divers accordingly — the incoming current face always has the most action. Sweetlips gather in large groups under the few overhangs, and green sea turtles rest among the corals. Massive barrel sponges cling to the deeper wall. The hard coral coverage on the reef top (3–10 meters) is exceptional, providing a vibrant safety stop. Batu Bolong demands respect — currents can change rapidly and violently, downcurrents are a real hazard, and divers without current experience should not attempt it. For those with the skills, it delivers some of the most concentrated marine life viewing in the world.
