FAQ
What ruins can you see underwater?
Sections of ancient walls, column fragments, and stone blocks that slid beneath the surface due to earthquakes and land subsidence over the centuries. The ruins date from Lycian and Byzantine periods.
Is this site suitable for snorkelling?
Yes. The sheltered bay with clear water and shallow ruins makes it an excellent snorkelling location. The Byzantine monastery ruins above water add to the overall experience.
What is the best time of year?
May through October offers warm water (22–28°C) and calm seas. June to September provides the warmest water and best visibility. The bay is naturally sheltered from prevailing winds.
What type of aircraft is it?
A Douglas C-47 Skytrain, the military transport version of the iconic DC-3 airliner. The aircraft was decommissioned from the Turkish Air Force and deliberately sunk to create an artificial reef.
Is penetration possible?
The fuselage is accessible in parts, but penetration is limited due to the aircraft's size and the presence of marine growth. Most of the interest is on the exterior, where the distinctive silhouette makes for outstanding photography.
