Western Reunion dive sites

Reunion's bull shark situation has primarily affected surfers and swimmers on the eastern and northeastern coasts. The western lagoon of Saint-Gilles, where recreational diving takes place, is a protected reef area separated from the open ocean by a natural barrier reef. Scuba diving has not been subject to the swimming and surfing restrictions applied to other water activities. Dive operators maintain excellent safety records, and the lagoon environment is considered low-risk. Blacktip reef sharks encountered inside the lagoon are harmless reef species.

The Saint-Gilles lagoon falls within the Reserve Naturelle Marine de La Reunion, established in 2007. The reserve enforces strict regulations including no-take zones where all fishing is prohibited, regulated diving zones with controlled visitor numbers, and mooring buoys to prevent anchor damage. These measures have produced visible improvements in coral health and fish populations. Dive operators must hold reserve permits and follow specific guidelines regarding diver behaviour and group sizes.

The Saint-Gilles lagoon is one of the most beginner-friendly dive destinations in the Indian Ocean. The lagoon's protected position means minimal currents, clear water, and gentle sandy entries. Several dive centres offer introductory dives (bapteme de plongee) within the lagoon at depths of 6 to 12 meters, where turtle encounters and colourful reef fish provide an excellent first diving experience.
