Saint-Gilles Lagoon Reef
Saint-Gilles-les-Bains · Western Reunion · Reunion
The Saint-Gilles lagoon stretches along Reunion Island's western coast like a natural aquarium, a protected reef system where volcanic geology meets Indian Ocean tropical marine life. Reunion is a dramatic place -- a French overseas department dominated by active volcanoes and mountainous terrain. On the sheltered western side, a barrier reef creates a calm lagoon harbouring the island's richest marine ecosystem. I entered the water from a dive boat moored inside the Marine Reserve, descending onto a reef that demonstrated why this area has been protected since 2007. Hard coral coverage was impressive -- brain corals, staghorn formations, and table corals created a three-dimensional landscape teeming with fish. Within seconds, a large green turtle appeared, swimming directly toward me before gliding past close enough to touch. Turtles are the signature encounter here, and on this single dive I counted seven individuals. The reef flat at 12 meters offered extraordinary diversity. Moorish idols swam in pairs among coral heads, parrotfish in electric blues crunched coral audibly, and surgeonfish in dense schools moved across the reef like grazing herds. Trumpetfish hung vertically among sea whips, relying on camouflage to approach prey. In the sandy channels, I spotted a well-concealed seahorse clinging to a hydroid. The outer reef slope drops steeply, and here blacktip reef sharks patrol where the lagoon meets open ocean. Spotted eagle rays cruise past in pairs, their white-spotted surfaces catching the light. Deeper sections support beautiful gorgonian fans and soft coral colonies in reds, purples, and oranges. Surfacing between dives, the view is pure Reunion: volcanic peaks wreathed in cloud, lush slopes descending to the coast, and turquoise lagoon stretching in both directions. The contrast between the island's wild interior and calm lagoon diving is one of Reunion's great appeals. With well-equipped dive centres and marine reserve protection delivering visible results, Saint-Gilles offers tropical reef diving combining accessibility with genuine quality.

FAQ
Is it safe to dive in Reunion given the shark risk?
Reunion's bull shark situation has primarily affected surfers and swimmers on the eastern and northeastern coasts. The western lagoon of Saint-Gilles, where recreational diving takes place, is a protected reef area separated from the open ocean by a natural barrier reef. Scuba diving has not been subject to the swimming and surfing restrictions applied to other water activities. Dive operators maintain excellent safety records, and the lagoon environment is considered low-risk. Blacktip reef sharks encountered inside the lagoon are harmless reef species.
What marine protection measures exist at Saint-Gilles?
The Saint-Gilles lagoon falls within the Reserve Naturelle Marine de La Reunion, established in 2007. The reserve enforces strict regulations including no-take zones where all fishing is prohibited, regulated diving zones with controlled visitor numbers, and mooring buoys to prevent anchor damage. These measures have produced visible improvements in coral health and fish populations. Dive operators must hold reserve permits and follow specific guidelines regarding diver behaviour and group sizes.
Can beginners dive the Saint-Gilles lagoon?
The Saint-Gilles lagoon is one of the most beginner-friendly dive destinations in the Indian Ocean. The lagoon's protected position means minimal currents, clear water, and gentle sandy entries. Several dive centres offer introductory dives (bapteme de plongee) within the lagoon at depths of 6 to 12 meters, where turtle encounters and colourful reef fish provide an excellent first diving experience. PADI, SSI, and FFESSM certification courses are available from multiple operators in Saint-Gilles-les-Bains.
