How deep is Thunderball Grotto in the Exumas?
Thunderball Grotto is very shallow, with depths ranging from the surface to about 5 metres (15 feet). The underwater entrances sit at around 3 metres depth. At low tide you can wade and swim in easily; at high tide the entrances are fully submerged and require swimming through short tunnels.
When is the best time to visit Thunderball Grotto?
Visit at low tide for the easiest access -- you can stand at the entrance and walk into the grotto. Around midday, sunlight streams through the openings in the ceiling creating spectacular light beams that illuminate the fish-filled interior. The dry season from November to April offers the best weather.
Do you need scuba gear to explore Thunderball Grotto?
No, Thunderball Grotto is best explored with just a mask and snorkel. The shallow depth and enclosed space make scuba gear unnecessary and impractical. At low tide, you can walk into the grotto; at high tide, a short underwater swim through the entrance is needed.
