Thunderball Grotto

Staniel Cay · Exuma Cays · Bahamas

Thunderball Grotto is one of the most iconic snorkelling and shallow dive sites in the entire Caribbean. Located near Staniel Cay in the Exuma Cays, this natural limestone cave rose to fame as a filming location for the James Bond films Thunderball and Never Say Never Again, as well as the movie Splash. The grotto is a hollowed-out rock formation that rises from the shallow seabed, with several underwater entrances at around 3 metres depth that open into a spacious interior chamber. At low tide, the entrances are partially exposed and easy to swim through. At high tide, they are fully submerged, requiring a short breath-hold swim to enter. Once inside, the magic becomes apparent: openings in the cave ceiling allow shafts of sunlight to stream down into the chamber, creating an ethereal light show that illuminates the turquoise water and the dense schools of fish swirling within. The marine life inside the grotto is remarkably abundant. Yellowtail snapper, sergeant majors, French and queen angelfish, blue tangs, and parrotfish fill the chamber in staggering numbers, accustomed to human visitors and often swimming within arm's reach. The rock walls are encrusted with colourful sponges and corals, and spiny lobsters hide in the deeper recesses. The combination of dramatic lighting, dense fish life, and enclosed space creates an experience unlike any other in the Bahamas. Thunderball Grotto is reached by boat from Staniel Cay, a short ride of just a few minutes. No certification is needed as the site is shallow enough for snorkelling. The best experience comes at midday during low tide, when the overhead sun creates the most dramatic light beams. Visiting early in the day also means fewer crowds, as the grotto is one of the most popular stops in the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park area.

FAQ

How deep is Thunderball Grotto in the Exumas?

Thunderball Grotto is very shallow, with depths ranging from the surface to about 5 metres (15 feet). The underwater entrances sit at around 3 metres depth. At low tide you can wade and swim in easily; at high tide the entrances are fully submerged and require swimming through short tunnels.

When is the best time to visit Thunderball Grotto?

Visit at low tide for the easiest access -- you can stand at the entrance and walk into the grotto. Around midday, sunlight streams through the openings in the ceiling creating spectacular light beams that illuminate the fish-filled interior. The dry season from November to April offers the best weather.

Do you need scuba gear to explore Thunderball Grotto?

No, Thunderball Grotto is best explored with just a mask and snorkel. The shallow depth and enclosed space make scuba gear unnecessary and impractical. At low tide, you can walk into the grotto; at high tide, a short underwater swim through the entrance is needed.
