Yakushima Sea Turtle Beach is the premier diving destination on Yakushima Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site off the southern tip of Kyushu known for its ancient cedar forests and extraordinary biodiversity both on land and in the sea. The waters around Yakushima host Japan's highest concentration of sea turtles, making this one of the most reliable locations in the country for turtle encounters on every dive. The dive sites around the island feature a mix of temperate and subtropical coral reef, influenced by the warm Kuroshio Current that brings tropical species to these relatively northern waters. Green sea turtles and loggerhead turtles are the stars of the show, found grazing on the reef, resting in sandy patches, or cruising through the water column. During the summer nesting season, female loggerheads come ashore at night to lay eggs on the island's sandy beaches — a spectacle that can be observed on guided tours, complementing the underwater experience. The reef environment is healthy and diverse, with a surprising variety of hard and soft corals supporting communities of clownfish, butterflyfish, parrotfish, and moray eels. The relatively shallow depth profile — rarely exceeding 20 meters — and the mild currents make this an excellent destination for beginner divers seeking guaranteed turtle encounters.
