White Rock
Koh Tao · Gulf of Thailand · Thailand
White Rock is Koh Tao's most popular and frequently dived site, a large underwater rock formation located between the island and Koh Nang Yuan. Named for the white sandy bottom that surrounds the rocky outcrops, the site ranges from 5 to 22 meters and offers something for every diver level. The rock formations are covered in hard and soft corals, anemones, and barrel sponges, creating a vibrant reef ecosystem. Hawksbill and green sea turtles are reliably encountered — the turtles are accustomed to divers and often allow close approach. Blue-spotted stingrays rest on sandy patches, barracuda school in the water column, and triggerfish patrol their territories aggressively during nesting season. Moray eels of various species occupy holes throughout the reef, from small white-eyed morays to large giant morays. Angelfish, butterflyfish, and pufferfish are abundant, and patient macro searchers find nudibranchs, seahorses, and ornate ghost pipefish. White Rock is exceptional as a night dive — bioluminescent plankton, hunting lionfish, Spanish dancers, and enormous hermit crabs make the after-dark experience magical. The site's proximity to Koh Tao (10 minutes by boat) and Koh Nang Yuan makes it easily accessible for multiple dives throughout the day. It serves as the primary training site for hundreds of new divers certified on Koh Tao each month. Despite the traffic, the reef remains in good condition and consistently delivers satisfying dives.
