Um Gamar

Hurghada · Red Sea · Egypt

Um Gamar (Mother of the Moon) is a crescent-shaped offshore reef system near Hurghada, renowned for regular dolphin encounters and superb reef diving. The reef encloses a shallow lagoon where a resident pod of spinner dolphins often rests and socialises, providing breathtaking encounters for snorkellers and divers lucky enough to coincide with their visits. The outer walls of Um Gamar drop steeply into blue water, covered in hard and soft corals in excellent condition. The northern wall is particularly impressive, with large gorgonian fans, dense soft coral growth, and frequent Napoleon wrasse patrols. Barracuda schools hang in the blue, and reef sharks are occasionally spotted on the deeper sections. Manta rays pass through during seasonal movements, adding to the big-animal appeal. The reef top and lagoon area at 3–10 meters feature pristine hard coral formations with clouds of anthias, butterflyfish, and chromis creating a vibrant, colourful scene. Moray eels are abundant, with several large specimens occupying prominent positions on the reef. Giant clams dot the reef flat. The site is reached by day boat from Hurghada, approximately 90 minutes, and is a favourite on local dive centre schedules. Two-dive trips typically combine Um Gamar with nearby sites. The lagoon can be used for surface intervals and snorkelling between dives. Currents are usually moderate and manageable, with drift dives along the wall the standard format.
