Tofo Beach Manta Reef is one of the planet's premier destinations for manta ray encounters, situated off the coast of Praia do Tofo in Mozambique's Inhambane province. This small stretch of the Mozambican coastline has become legendary in the diving world for the sheer reliability and frequency of its manta ray sightings — both reef mantas and the larger giant oceanic mantas frequent the area's cleaning stations and feeding grounds, making every dive a potential manta encounter. The reef itself sits at depths of 12 to 25 meters, featuring a rocky substrate with scattered coral formations that serve as cleaning stations where mantas hover while cleaner wrasses remove parasites. The experience of kneeling on the sandy bottom while a five-meter manta ray glides silently overhead, close enough to see the individual patterns on its belly, is one of diving's most profound moments. Beyond mantas, the waters off Tofo host an impressive roster of megafauna: whale sharks visit from October through March, humpback whales migrate through from June to November, and hammerhead sharks are occasionally encountered on deeper dives. Tofo retains a laid-back, backpacker-friendly atmosphere despite its world-class diving, offering a refreshingly unpretentious alternative to more developed dive destinations. Conditions are best from October through March, when water is warmest, visibility peaks, and both mantas and whale sharks are most active.
