Chebeh Island

Chebeh Island is a small, rocky islet located south of Tioman Island in the South China Sea, offering one of the most distinctive diving experiences on Malaysia's west coast. Unlike the coral-dominated reefs found elsewhere around Tioman, Chebeh's underwater landscape is defined by massive granite boulders that tumble from the surface to depths of 25 metres and beyond. These boulders create a labyrinth of swim-throughs, tunnels, and narrow canyons that give the dive an almost architectural quality. Light filters through gaps in the rock, creating dramatic beams that illuminate the sandy channels between boulders. The granite surfaces are colonised by hard corals, sponges, and encrusting organisms, softening the rocky landscape with living colour. The exposed position of Chebeh in the open sea means that currents regularly sweep past, bringing pelagic visitors that are less common on Tioman's sheltered house reefs. Schools of chevron barracuda form tight spirals in the blue, and large trevally patrol the boulder field in search of prey. Groupers of impressive size lurk in the deeper crevices, and sweetlips shelter in the overhangs. Sea turtles are regular visitors, often seen resting between boulders. Moderate currents can develop, particularly around the exposed points, making this site best suited for intermediate divers. The swim-throughs require good buoyancy control to navigate without disturbing silt or damaging coral growth. On calm days, the visibility often exceeds 20 metres, revealing the full majesty of the granite formations and the marine life they support.
