Shark Point

Shark Point (Hin Musang) is one of Phuket's premier dive sites, a series of three submerged limestone pinnacles rising from a sandy seabed at 28 meters. The pinnacles are covered in dense soft corals — vivid purple, pink, and red Dendronephthya colonies give the site spectacular colour, particularly when illuminated by torch or strobe. The site takes its name from the leopard sharks (zebra sharks) that rest on sandy patches between the pinnacles. These graceful, spotted sharks are docile and allow close approach, making for excellent photography. Bamboo sharks are also found sheltering under overhangs and in small caves. Beyond the sharks, the pinnacles support outstanding biodiversity. Seahorses cling to gorgonians, ornate ghost pipefish hide among crinoids, and frogfish camouflage against sponges. Moray eels and lionfish are abundant. Cuttlefish are frequently seen performing their mesmerising colour displays. Schools of barracuda and snapper circle the pinnacles in the water column, and the occasional whale shark passes through during plankton-rich periods. The three pinnacles offer variety — the shallowest reaches 8 meters and is covered in anemones and soft corals, while the deeper pinnacles have larger gorgonians and more shark encounters. Shark Point is a 90-minute boat ride from Phuket and is almost always combined with the King Cruiser wreck on day trips. Visibility can range from 5 to 25 meters depending on conditions.
