Overview
Richelieu Rock is widely regarded as Thailand's finest dive site and consistently ranks among the best in the world. This submerged limestone pinnacle, located in the Andaman Sea near the Surin Islands, barely breaks the surface at low tide and drops to 35 meters on all sides. The entire rock is carpeted in vibrant purple and red soft corals that create a stunning visual backdrop. What makes Richelieu Rock extraordinary is the density and diversity of life packed onto this single formation. Macro photographers find seahorses clinging to gorgonians, ornate ghost pipefish hiding among crinoids, harlequin shrimp beneath urchins, and multiple species of frogfish camouflaged against the corals. At the same time, the open-ocean location attracts large pelagics — whale sharks are regularly encountered between February and April, drawn by the plankton-rich currents. Manta rays pass through, and large schools of barracuda, trevally, and chevron barracuda circle the pinnacle. Cuttlefish perform their colour-changing displays along the reef. The rock's shape creates different habitats on each face: the sheltered side hosts delicate macro life, while the current-exposed face attracts the schooling fish and pelagics. Multiple dives are needed to explore all faces, and serious underwater photographers often dedicate entire liveaboard trips to this single site. Richelieu Rock is accessed by liveaboard from Khao Lak or Ranong, with the Similan/Surin national park season running November to April.
