Overview
Ras Mohammed National Park, located at the southernmost tip of the Sinai Peninsula, is one of the Red Sea's crown jewels. Where the Gulf of Suez meets the Gulf of Aqaba, powerful currents converge to create an extraordinarily rich marine ecosystem. The park encompasses several world-class dive sites, with Shark Reef and Jolanda Reef being the most celebrated. The underwater topography is dramatic: sheer walls drop from shallow reef plateaus to 80+ meters, adorned with massive fan corals, soft coral trees, and table corals in perfect health. The current-swept walls attract enormous schools of jackfish and snapper that form dense, swirling columns, while barracuda hold formation in the blue. Napoleon wrasse are abundant, and whitetip reef sharks are regularly seen resting on ledges or cruising the wall. Eagle rays pass through the blue with elegant ease. The shallow reef tops host vibrant coral gardens with thousands of anthias creating living orange clouds. The Jolanda section features remnants of a cargo ship that slid off the reef — containers and a famous bathroom fixture cargo are scattered across the reef slope. Ras Mohammed is accessed by boat from Sharm el-Sheikh, approximately 30 minutes away. Park regulations limit the number of boats and enforce mooring buoys to protect the reef. Drift dives along the wall with a pickup from the boat are the standard format, and strong currents should be expected.
