Orimas Thila is a premier dive site on the outer rim of North Male Atoll, a dramatic underwater pinnacle that combines steep walls, extraordinary soft coral growth, and reliable encounters with grey reef sharks. Rising from the surrounding reef to within just 3 meters of the surface, this compact yet intensely rich thila demonstrates why the Maldives' channel and pinnacle dives rank among the finest in the world. The pinnacle's structure is defined by sheer drop-offs on multiple sides, creating a vertical underwater tower that plunges to 30 meters. The walls are adorned with a spectacular mosaic of marine life at every depth level. Between 5 and 12 meters, hard corals dominate with robust table and branching formations that shelter clouds of anthias, chromis, and butterflyfish. The middle zone from 12 to 20 meters transitions to mixed hard and soft coral coverage, with enormous sea fans and whip corals extending into the current to filter feed. The deeper overhangs between 20 and 25 meters are where Orimas Thila truly impresses. Ledges and caves shelter dense clusters of dendronephthya soft corals, giant moray eels, and resting whitetip reef sharks. Lionfish hunt in the shadows, and careful observers will find longnose hawkfish perched on gorgonian fans. The northern edge, exposed to the strongest currents, is the prime spot for grey reef shark encounters, with groups regularly patrolling the blue water just off the wall. The open water surrounding the thila adds a pelagic dimension to every dive. Schools of bluefin trevally swirl in hunting formations, while yellowback fusiliers create shimmering curtains that part and reform around the pinnacle. Napoleon wrasse of impressive size cruise past with characteristic slow-motion confidence, and hawksbill turtles are common visitors to the reef top. Orimas Thila rewards divers who can handle its challenging conditions. Strong currents demand excellent buoyancy control and the ability to descend quickly, but the payoff is a dive site that packs an extraordinary density of marine life into a compact underwater landscape accessible from the Maldivian capital.
