Nusa Laut

Nusa Laut is a small island at the northern edge of the Banda Sea, positioned between Ambon and the deeper Banda waters, where pristine reef systems thrive in relative isolation from the pressures of mass tourism. The reefs around Nusa Laut are in exceptional condition — hard corals grow in dense, diverse formations that rival the best in Raja Ampat, while soft corals add splashes of vibrant colour to the deeper slopes. The island's position at the confluence of nutrient-rich currents from the Banda Sea and the warmer waters of the Moluccas creates conditions that support extraordinary biodiversity. Schools of barracuda are a common sight, their silver formations shifting and swirling against the blue backdrop. Trevally hunt in coordinated packs along the reef edges, and sea snakes are frequently encountered during their hunting forays through the coral. The deeper reef sections can produce encounters with hammerhead sharks, particularly during the September to November season when the sharks are attracted by the current and temperature conditions. The reef flats host healthy populations of reef fish — butterflyfish, angelfish, groupers, and wrasses in impressive variety. As dusk approaches, the rubble areas come alive with mandarin fish performing their nightly mating ritual. Nusa Laut remains under the radar for most divers, offering an experience of exploration and discovery that is increasingly rare in the well-travelled corridors of Indonesian diving. Access is typically via liveaboard from Ambon, and the island's remoteness ensures that every dive feels like a genuine expedition.
