Lima Rock South offers a distinctly different diving experience from the tropical clarity most divers associate with the Middle East. Here in the Musandam Peninsula, Oman's dramatic fjord-like coastline plunges into nutrient-rich waters where the Strait of Hormuz meets the Gulf of Oman, creating conditions that support extraordinary marine life density on a relatively compact reef. What it lacks in tropical visibility it compensates with biomass, atmosphere, and reliable shark encounters at depths accessible to all certification levels. The approach by boat is itself memorable. The Musandam coastline rises in sheer limestone cliffs reminiscent of Norwegian fjords, their angular faces reflecting in water that shifts between jade green and deep blue. Lima Rock sits offshore from this dramatic backdrop, a low rocky island with the southern reef extending underwater as a gently sloping coral formation. I descended the mooring line into green-tinged water with roughly 12 metres visibility. The reef slope began immediately, covered in dense hard coral with excellent coverage of brain, plate, and branching formations. Schools of anthias and bannerfish created clouds of activity over the coral heads. Within two minutes of reaching the reef edge at 10 metres, a blacktip reef shark glided past, its compact metre-long body moving with easy confidence. It circled once and was joined by a second shark from the deeper water below. The shark encounters at Lima Rock South are remarkably consistent. Over two dives I saw blacktips on both, a total of five individuals making passes along the reef edge. Their behaviour suggests complete habituation to divers. They approach closely, observe briefly, and continue their patrol without agitation. The reef itself rewards slow exploration. Cuttlefish are abundant, their colour-changing displays endlessly fascinating. Nudibranchs of several species crawl over the substrate. Moray eels occupy crevices in the coral, and scorpionfish lie camouflaged on rocky ledges. A hawksbill turtle cruised the reef slope, feeding on soft coral attached to the rocks. Lima Rock South may not deliver the crystal visibility of the Maldives or the Red Sea, but it offers something equally valuable: wild marine encounters in a landscape of raw geological drama, accessible to divers of every level.
