Monad Shoal

Monad Shoal off Malapascua Island in the Visayas, Philippines, is one of the world's only locations where pelagic thresher sharks can be reliably encountered by recreational divers. This submerged island rises from deep water to a plateau at 15–25 meters, where cleaning stations attract thresher sharks from the surrounding abyss at dawn. These extraordinary sharks — distinguished by their tail fins which can be as long as their body — rise from depths of 200+ meters to be cleaned by wrasses on the shoal. The experience begins with a pre-dawn boat ride and descent in low light to the cleaning stations, where divers wait quietly at 25–30 meters. The sharks arrive with the light, gliding in from the blue with their impossibly long tails trailing behind them — a genuinely awe-inspiring sight. Multiple sharks may visit during a single dive. Beyond thresher sharks, Monad Shoal offers diverse diving. Devil rays (mobula rays) are frequently seen, and hammerhead sharks make occasional appearances. Whitetip reef sharks rest on the plateau, and mandarin fish perform their mating dance at dusk on the nearby shallow reefs. Manta rays pass through seasonally. Malapascua itself is a small, relaxed island with a growing collection of dive resorts. The island's other dive sites include Gato Island (whitetip reef shark cave) and various coral gardens. Monad Shoal has put Malapascua firmly on the world diving map as the thresher shark capital.
