Koh Tachai Pinnacle

Koh Tachai Pinnacle is a legendary dive site in the northern Similan/Surin marine area, renowned for overwhelming concentrations of schooling fish and big-animal encounters. The pinnacle is a massive granite dome rising from 35 meters to approximately 12 meters below the surface, located in open water south of Koh Tachai island. The rock is carpeted in anemones, hard corals, and barrel sponges, but the real spectacle is the fish life. Schools of chevron barracuda numbering in the thousands form enormous spiralling columns that can engulf divers entirely. Giant trevally hunt aggressively through the schools, and massive schools of batfish drift around the pinnacle's flanks. Below the main dome, leopard sharks rest on the sandy seabed. The open-ocean position means regular visits from manta rays and whale sharks, particularly during plankton-rich periods from February to April. Currents at Koh Tachai Pinnacle can be fierce and highly variable — conditions can change mid-dive, and downcurrents are a known hazard. This is a dive that demands experience, fitness, and respect for the conditions. When conditions align, however, Koh Tachai delivers some of the most awe-inspiring underwater experiences in Southeast Asia. Liveaboards typically schedule multiple dives here when conditions permit, and many divers consider it the highlight of their Similan trip. The island itself is currently closed to overnight visitors due to environmental recovery, but diving continues.
