Hurghada Small Giftun Island
Overview
Small Giftun Island sits five kilometres offshore from Hurghada, close enough for a comfortable day trip but far enough to escape the sedimentation and development pressure stressing the mainland fringing reefs. Since the Hurghada Marine Protected Area was established, Small Giftun has become the benchmark for what Red Sea reefs look like when properly managed. The dive boat crossed from Hurghada harbour in twenty minutes, mooring on a designated buoy on the island's sheltered western side. The island is barren desert rock above water, but below the surface the reef drops through coral-covered terraces to a sandy slope at twenty-two metres. I descended along the first terrace, immediately struck by the hard coral coverage. Fire coral, brain coral, and massive Porites heads created complex three-dimensional structure teeming with life. Butterflyfish worked the coral surfaces in pairs. Anthias swarmed in characteristic pink clouds around every coral head. The overhangs between terraces provided the dive's signature feature. Dense schools of glassfish packed into shaded recesses, their transparent bodies creating a shimmering curtain that parted as I approached. Lionfish hung beneath the overhang edges, positioned where fleeing glassfish would swim. The predator-prey dynamic played out in real time, a lionfish striking with a sudden lunge, glassfish erupting in all directions. Blue-spotted stingrays rested on sandy patches between coral heads. Giant moray eels occupied several crevices, their heads protruding with jaws gaping in rhythmic breathing that looks threatening but is simply respiration. The shallow reef top at three metres provided an extended safety stop in a coral garden of surprising beauty. Anemonefish defended their hosts. Surgeonfish grazed in schools. The light illuminated corals in their full chromatic range. This is the reef that first drew divers to the Red Sea, and Small Giftun demonstrates it can still exist when protection is genuine.
