HP Reef (Rainbow Reef)

HP Reef (also known as Rainbow Reef or Girifushi Thila) in North Malé Atoll is widely considered one of the most beautiful dive sites in the Maldives, celebrated for its extraordinary soft coral coverage. This protected marine area features a long thila (submerged reef) with a top at approximately 10 meters, walls dropping to 30 meters, and overhangs dripping with soft corals in every imaginable colour. The nickname "Rainbow Reef" is well earned — vivid reds, oranges, pinks, purples, and yellows cover every surface of the overhangs and wall faces, creating a kaleidoscopic underwater garden that glows under torch light. The overhangs and small caves are filled with schools of glassfish that form shimmering clouds, parting as divers approach and closing behind them. Lionfish hover at the edges, hunting the glassfish. Whitetip reef sharks rest on sandy ledges beneath the overhangs and patrol the deeper wall sections. Napoleon wrasse are resident and often curious. Oriental sweetlips gather in small groups under coral formations, their spotted patterns contrasting with the colourful background. Large moray eels peer from crevices, and lobsters hide in the deeper recesses. The reef top hosts anemones with Maldivian clownfish and healthy hard coral growth. HP Reef is a protected site with strict diving regulations — anchoring is prohibited, and diver numbers may be limited. The thila is accessed from Malé-based liveaboards or resort day boats in North Malé Atoll. Currents can be strong, and timing the dive with appropriate tidal flow is crucial for the best experience.
