Hin Daeng

Hin Daeng (Red Rock) is a dramatic submerged reef in the open Andaman Sea, located roughly 60 kilometres southwest of Koh Lanta. Together with its companion site Hin Muang, it forms one of Thailand's most exciting deep-diving destinations. The reef takes its name from the dense covering of crimson soft corals that drape every surface, creating a vivid red landscape unlike anything else in Thai waters. The main wall drops vertically from 7 meters to beyond 60 meters, with the soft coral coverage at its most spectacular between 15 and 30 meters. The open-ocean location and deep water attract impressive pelagic life. Manta rays are the headline species — they visit the reef regularly during the dive season, sometimes in groups, circling the wall or visiting cleaning stations. Whale sharks pass through during plankton-rich periods, particularly in March and April. Grey reef sharks patrol the deeper sections of the wall, and large schools of trevally, barracuda, and tuna hold in the current. The reef top at 7–12 meters is a vibrant hard coral garden with anemones, moray eels, and lionfish. Hin Daeng is reached by speedboat from Koh Lanta (approximately 90 minutes) or liveaboard. The journey through open ocean means sea conditions are critical — trips are cancelled in rough weather. Currents can be strong and variable, including downcurrents, making this a site for experienced divers only. The reward for the journey and the challenge is world-class diving with genuine big-animal encounters.
