Overview
Hanifaru Bay in UNESCO-designated Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve hosts the world's largest known gatherings of manta rays. During the southwest monsoon (June-November), currents trap plankton in this small bay, attracting up to 200 mantas feeding simultaneously — a spectacle unmatched anywhere. Only snorkeling is permitted to protect the mantas. Whale sharks also visit during peak plankton events.
