Fish Head (Mushimasmingili Thila)

Fish Head (Mushimasmingili Thila) in North Ari Atoll is one of the Maldives' most iconic dive sites, renowned for its extraordinary concentration of grey reef sharks and marine life. This circular underwater pinnacle (thila) rises from the deep atoll floor to approximately 10 meters below the surface, with walls dropping steeply on all sides. The site's protected status has allowed marine life to flourish undisturbed. Grey reef sharks are the headline attraction — a resident population patrols the walls and congregates on the current-facing side of the thila, where nutrient-rich water brings food. On good dives, 20 or more sharks may be visible simultaneously, cruising past divers with calm confidence. Massive Napoleon wrasse — some approaching 2 meters in length — are equally prominent and will approach divers closely. Giant trevally hunt aggressively around the pinnacle, creating explosive scenes as they charge through baitfish. Schools of snapper and fusiliers form dense aggregations on the walls. Eagle rays glide through on occasion. The thila's overhangs shelter sweetlips, large groupers, and moray eels. The reef surface is covered in healthy soft corals and sponges. Diving at Fish Head requires experience — currents can be very strong, and the circular shape of the thila means current direction affects where sharks congregate. Guides hook into the reef on the upcurrent side to observe the sharks passing. Fish Head is a standard stop on North Ari Atoll liveaboard itineraries and is also accessible from resort-based diving operations in the atoll.
