FAQ

What certification do I need to dive the Portofino Marine Reserve?

Open Water certification is sufficient to visit the Christ of the Abyss at 17 metres and explore many of the shallower reef sites. Advanced Open Water opens up deeper walls and wrecks reaching 40 to 50 metres. The reserve has over 20 dive spots suitable for various levels, from beginners to experienced technical divers.

When is the best time to dive Portofino?

June through September provides the warmest water at 23 to 25 degrees Celsius and the most reliable conditions. May and October can offer excellent visibility with fewer divers. The marine reserve is diveable year-round, though winter water temperatures drop to 13 degrees and require a drysuit.

What is the Christ of the Abyss statue at Portofino?

Il Cristo degli Abissi is a 2.5-metre bronze statue of Christ with arms raised toward the surface, placed on the seabed at 17 metres depth in San Fruttuoso bay in 1954. It commemorates Dario Gonzatti, the first Italian to use scuba equipment, who died diving in 1947. The statue is one of the most photographed underwater landmarks in the world and is accessible to divers of all levels.
