Taganga, Santa Marta dive sites

Taganga is one of the most popular and affordable places in the world to get scuba certified. The small fishing village has numerous PADI and SSI dive centres offering Open Water courses at very competitive prices. Playa Grande and other nearby sites provide ideal conditions for training: warm water, mild currents, and shallow reefs. Many backpackers and budget travellers choose Taganga specifically for certification.

Playa Grande offers classic Caribbean reef diving with colourful tropical fish including parrotfish, angelfish, trumpetfish, and large schools of sergeant majors. Moray eels hide in crevices, lobsters are common under ledges, and you may encounter barracuda hunting over the reef. The sandy bottom patches sometimes reveal stingrays, and octopuses are an occasional treat.

Taganga sits just outside the border of Tayrona National Park, about 5 kilometres north of Santa Marta. Some dive operators offer dives within the park boundaries, which have stricter protections and even richer marine life. The proximity to Tayrona makes Taganga a convenient base for both diving and visiting one of Colombia's most beautiful coastal national parks.
