Turneffe Atoll dive sites

The Elbow sits at the southeastern tip of Turneffe Atoll where two reef walls converge at a sharp angle. This creates a natural funnel for ocean currents, bringing nutrient-rich water and attracting large schools of pelagic fish, eagle rays, and reef sharks. The combination of healthy coral walls and abundant big marine life makes it one of Belize's premier dive sites.

Advanced Open Water certification is strongly recommended for The Elbow. Currents can be strong and unpredictable, and the dive often involves drift techniques along the wall. Experience with drift diving and comfort in current are important. Calm days with weaker current do occur but cannot be predicted.

The Elbow is accessed by boat from Turneffe Atoll resorts or as part of a day trip or liveaboard from Belize City. The boat ride from Belize City takes approximately 1.5-2 hours. Several dive resorts operate directly on Turneffe Atoll, making it a short ride to The Elbow.

The Aquarium features a wall that drops from about 11 metres to 18 metres, making it a comfortable dive for all skill levels. The wall face is the main attraction, covered in colourful invertebrates and corals that give the site its aquarium-like name.

Turneffe Atoll is reached by boat, typically a 1.5 to 2 hour ride from Belize City or San Pedro. Most operators run full-day trips that include two or three dives at different sites around the atoll. Several dive resorts on Turneffe offer on-site access.
