Cocoa Thila

Cocoa Thila is a beautifully formed submerged pinnacle in South Male Atoll, named after the nearby Cocoa Island resort. Rising from a sandy seabed at 30 metres to a flat top at approximately 8 metres, this compact thila packs an extraordinary amount of marine life into a relatively small area. The pinnacle's walls feature a series of dramatic overhangs between 15 and 25 metres, richly covered in soft corals, sea fans, and tubastrea cup corals. These overhangs create sheltered habitats where groupers lurk, giant moray eels coil in crevices, and clouds of glassfish shimmer in the torchlight. Lionfish hang inverted beneath ledges, and nudibranchs provide macro subjects for keen-eyed photographers. The deeper sections around the base of the thila attract grey reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks, which patrol in lazy circles. Eagle rays occasionally pass through, and Napoleon wrasse are almost always present, approaching divers with characteristic curiosity. The top of the thila features healthy hard coral gardens where sea turtles rest and cleaning stations attract a constant stream of visitors. Moderate currents are typical and generally manageable for intermediate-level divers. The compact size of the thila means that a single dive allows a thorough exploration, spiralling from the deeper overhangs to the sunlit coral top. Cocoa Thila is an excellent all-round dive that combines beautiful scenery, diverse marine life, and reliable shark encounters in a single immersion.
