Cebu Bantayan Island

Cebu City · Cebu · Philippines

Bantayan Island sits off Cebu's northern tip, a low-lying coral island better known for white sand beaches than diving. Beneath those turquoise shallows lie reef systems that benefit from being overlooked by the Visayas dive circuit, which funnels visitors to Moalboal, Malapascua, and Oslob while Bantayan remains quietly excellent. The dive boat departed Santa Fe's calm eastern shore and motored ten minutes to a coral garden beginning at three metres and sloping to a mini-wall at eighteen. Visibility was exceptional, easily twenty-five metres, illuminating every detail of the reef below. The hard coral coverage was immediately striking. Dense staghorn fields in the shallows transitioned to massive brain corals and table corals on the slope. The reef appeared genuinely healthy, with minimal bleaching and no blast fishing damage. A green turtle rested on a coral ledge at twelve metres, its shell encrusted with algae suggesting long residency. The seagrass meadows between dive sites were equally rewarding. We snorkelled over a vast Thalassia bed where seahorses grip the blades, their tiny forms requiring patience to locate. My guide found two thorny seahorses and a robust ghost pipefish within a twenty-metre radius. The seagrass serves as nursery habitat, and the connectivity between ecosystems is visible in the abundance of juvenile fish. The second dive followed a gentle wall on the eastern coast, the reef crest at five metres dropping to rubble at twenty-five. Butterflyfish in pairs worked the coral face. Schools of fusiliers streamed along the wall edge. A family of clownfish defended an anemone with characteristic fury, the tiny male rushing at my mask with admirable but futile aggression. Bantayan's diving will never challenge for headlines. There are no manta cleaning stations, no thresher sharks, no sardine runs. What it offers is the simple pleasure of healthy reef, clear water, and the absence of other divers, qualities that become rarer each year across the Philippines.

FAQ

How do I get to Bantayan Island from Cebu City?

Travel north from Cebu City by bus or private vehicle to Hagnaya Port, approximately four hours by road. From Hagnaya, ferries depart regularly for Santa Fe on Bantayan Island, with the crossing taking about one hour. Fast craft services also operate on this route. Alternatively, small aircraft occasionally fly from Cebu Mactan International Airport to Bantayan's airstrip, though schedules are irregular. Most visitors combine the journey with a night at Santa Fe beach before or after diving.

Are there established dive operators on Bantayan Island?

Bantayan has a small number of dive operators, primarily based around Santa Fe on the island's southeastern coast. These are typically small-scale operations with experienced local guides who know the reef systems intimately. Equipment availability can be limited for specialised gear, so bringing your own regulator, computer, and mask is advisable. The operators offer PADI and SSI courses alongside guided fun dives. Advance booking is recommended during high season as boat and guide availability can be constrained.

What is the best area around Bantayan for diving?

The eastern and southeastern coastline offers the best reef diving, with coral gardens starting in shallow water and gentle walls dropping to 20 to 25 metres. The northern tip has exposed rocky reef suitable for intermediate divers with occasional current. Virgin Island, a small sandbar south of Bantayan, has surrounding shallow reef excellent for snorkelling and discover scuba experiences. The seagrass beds between Bantayan and the Cebu mainland support unique marine life including seahorses and pipefish.
