Redang Island - Big Mount

Kuala Terengganu · Terengganu · Malaysia

Big Mount is widely regarded as the finest dive site in the Redang Island marine park, a massive submerged pinnacle located near the northern tip of Pulau Lima in Terengganu, Peninsular Malaysia. Rising from a sandy bottom at 35 meters to a submerged peak at 14 meters, this imposing underwater mountain offers the deepest and most dramatic diving available in the Redang group, with steep walls, exceptional gorgonian gardens, and the best chances of encountering pelagic visitors. The pinnacle structure descends steeply on all sides, creating a towering underwater presence that attracts both resident reef life and passing ocean travelers. The upper sections from 14 to 20 meters feature healthy hard coral coverage with brain corals, table formations, and dense patches of staghorn coral that shelter clouds of chromis, damsels, and anthias. Schools of batfish drift lazily around the pinnacle top, their flat silver bodies catching the ambient light. The deeper walls from 20 to 32 meters are where Big Mount truly distinguishes itself. Enormous gorgonian sea fans, some exceeding two meters across, extend from the rock face into the current. Whip corals create dense gardens on the steeper sections, and barrel sponges of impressive size dot the wall. This deeper zone attracts larger marine life. Blacktip reef sharks patrol the edges, schools of barracuda form hunting columns, and tuna blast through at speed. Large groupers hold territorial positions in caves and overhangs, and stingrays rest on sandy ledges. Visibility at Big Mount varies from 10 to 25 meters depending on conditions and time of season. The clearest water typically arrives between April and June, when plankton levels are lower. Later in the season, increased plankton can reduce visibility but simultaneously attracts filter-feeding megafauna. Whale shark sightings at Big Mount and surrounding sites, while rare, have been documented and add an element of hopeful anticipation to every dive. The site's depth profile means that bottom time at the most interesting levels is limited on air, making Nitrox a worthwhile option for divers who want to maximize their time on the wall. Big Mount rewards experienced divers with one of Peninsular Malaysia's most complete underwater experiences, combining healthy reef structure, impressive wall topography, and genuine pelagic potential in a single dive.

Access is by dive boat from resorts on Redang Island, taking about 15 to 20 minutes.

What depth does Big Mount go to?

Big Mount is a submerged pinnacle whose top sits at approximately 14 meters below the surface. The walls drop to a sandy bottom at 32 to 35 meters. The entry point via mooring buoy is at about 18 meters depth. The most interesting features including the large gorgonian fans and pelagic encounters are between 18 and 30 meters, making this primarily a deeper dive.

When is the best time to dive Big Mount?

The diving season at Redang runs from March to October. The best conditions at Big Mount are typically from April through June when visibility can reach 20 meters or more and seas are calmest.
