Barracuda Lake

Barracuda Lake on Coron Island, Palawan, is one of the most unusual dive sites in the world — a volcanic, landlocked lake hidden behind limestone cliffs with water temperatures reaching 38 °C at depth. The lake is accessed by climbing over a rocky ridge from the sea, descending into a sheltered basin surrounded by dramatic karst limestone walls. The water is crystal clear with visibility often exceeding 15 meters. The lake's signature feature is its extraordinary thermocline: surface water sits at a comfortable 28 °C, but at around 14 meters, the temperature rises dramatically to 36–38 °C due to geothermal heating from volcanic activity below. Passing through this thermocline is a visceral, disorienting experience — the water shimmers and distorts like heat haze, and the temperature shift is immediate and intense. Below the thermocline, the hot water is halocline-affected — a mix of fresh and salt water that creates shimmering visual effects. The underwater landscape is otherworldly: ghostly limestone rock formations, fallen trees, and smooth rock shelves create an eerie, alien environment. Despite the extreme conditions, some marine life thrives: the lake's namesake barracuda (a single large individual reportedly inhabits the lake), freshwater shrimp, and small fish. The diving is more about the surreal environment than wildlife. Barracuda Lake is included on virtually every Coron dive itinerary and is a highlight that divers remember long after the trip. The maximum depth is around 30 meters, and dives are typically short due to the heat.
