Apo Reef

Apo Reef Natural Park in the Mindoro Strait is the largest contiguous coral reef system in the Philippines and one of the most impressive in Southeast Asia. This massive reef complex consists of two coral atolls — North and South — separated by a deep channel, creating an underwater wonderland of walls, slopes, lagoons, and channels. The reef's protected status and remote location have preserved marine life in exceptional condition. The outer walls drop steeply from shallow reef flats into deep blue water, with hard coral coverage that rivals any reef in the Indo-Pacific. Whitetip and blacktip reef sharks patrol the walls, manta rays visit seasonal cleaning stations, and green and hawksbill turtles are abundant on the reef tops. Napoleon wrasse of impressive size cruise along the upper walls, and enormous schools of barracuda form swirling columns in the current-swept channels. The shallow lagoons support giant clams, healthy seagrass beds, and juvenile fish nurseries. Tuna and trevally hunt along the outer reef edge. The reef's sheer scale means that diving here feels genuinely exploratory — there are dozens of dive sites, and many sections remain rarely visited. Apo Reef is reached by boat from Sablayan on Occidental Mindoro's west coast, approximately 2–3 hours depending on sea conditions. Day trips and overnight excursions are both available, with overnight trips allowing more dives on this vast reef system. Park rangers manage access and enforce conservation rules.
