About this center
Hotel Guanaja & Guanaja Dive Center is the primary dive operation on the remote and largely untouched island of Guanaja, the most easterly of Honduras's Bay Islands. Guanaja marks the beginning of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second largest barrier reef in the world — and offers some of the healthiest, most pristine coral reefs in the entire Caribbean.
What makes diving in Guanaja extraordinary is its remoteness and the resulting lack of diving pressure. While Roatan and Utila attract thousands of divers annually, Guanaja's reefs see a fraction of that traffic, resulting in vibrant, undisturbed coral formations and marine life that behaves with the confidence of creatures unaccustomed to human contact. Over 30 dive sites offer a spectacular variety of underwater topography including pinnacles, vertical walls, lava tunnels, caves, canyons, and volcanic vents.
The highlight for many visiting divers is the Jado Trader, a 240-foot refrigerator freighter sunk in 1987 that now rests on a sandy bottom between 80 and 110 feet. This wreck is considered one of the most accessible and photogenic in the Caribbean, with prolific marine growth and regular visits from large groupers, barracuda, and schools of jacks.
The dive center operates from Hotel Guanaja, providing guests with waterfront accommodation and seamless access to diving. Operating hours are 7 AM to 7 PM daily, with courses available in English and Spanish through both PADI and SSI certification systems. Safety and comfort are priorities, with strict protocols and personalized dive groups.
