About this center
Haliotis is Portugal's largest dive centre network, with the Peniche branch providing access to the Berlengas Islands Natural Reserve — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and one of the finest temperate water diving destinations in Europe. The Berlengas archipelago lies 10 km offshore, and its granite and limestone formations create an underwater wonderland of caves, arches, and tunnels.
The reserve's strict protection has resulted in thriving marine life. Giant conger eels, octopus, spiny lobsters, and schools of bream fill the rocky formations, while the deeper sites attract sunfish (Mola mola), amberjack, and occasionally dolphins. The wreck of the Estela, a Portuguese navy vessel, provides atmospheric wreck diving at 28 metres. The islands' numerous caverns and swim-throughs create dramatic lighting effects with shafts of sunlight piercing the dark interiors.
The centre holds PADI and SSI certifications and offers courses in four languages. Technical diving is supported with nitrox and deep diving courses. The season runs April to November, with best conditions July-September when water temperatures reach 18-20°C and visibility averages 15-25 metres.
