About this center

Aliwal Shoal shark diving with ragged-tooth sharks, tiger sharks, and the annual sardine run — South Africa's best.

Blue Wilderness operates from Umkomaas on South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal coast, the base for diving Aliwal Shoal — a fossilised sand dune lying 5 km offshore that is one of Africa's top dive sites. The shoal's complex topography of caves, overhangs, and pinnacles creates a magnet for an extraordinary diversity of shark species.

The star attraction is the ragged-tooth shark (sand tiger) aggregation — from July to November, hundreds of these impressive sharks gather in the shoal's caves and overhangs for mating. Tiger sharks are encountered on dedicated baited dives, along with bull sharks, hammerheads, and Zambezi sharks. From June to July, the annual sardine run brings billions of sardines past the coast, pursued by sharks, dolphins, whales, and diving gannets — one of nature's greatest spectacles.

Blue Wilderness offers PADI courses and specialises in shark-focused experiences. The operation launches through the surf from Umkomaas beach using inflatable boats, which is itself an exciting experience. Ocean conditions can be challenging with reduced visibility during winter months, but the shark encounters are unmatched.
