About this center

São Miguel dive centre with blue shark encounters, volcanic topography, and the Princess Alice Bank pelagic dives.

Azores Dive Center operates from Ponta Delgada on São Miguel, the largest island in the Azores archipelago — a mid-Atlantic volcanic chain that creates one of Europe's most exciting and unusual dive destinations. The islands rise from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and the underwater topography is dramatic: volcanic pinnacles, lava arches, and walls dropping into abyssal depths.

The Azores are famous for pelagic encounters. Blue sharks are reliably encountered on dedicated open-ocean dives, where divers drift in blue water as these elegant predators circle curiously. Seasonal visitors include mako sharks, whale sharks, and manta rays. The Princess Alice Bank, a submerged seamount 80 km southwest, offers encounters with huge schools of mobula rays, tuna, and occasionally blue and mako sharks — a bucket-list dive for experienced divers.

Closer to shore, dive sites around São Miguel feature volcanic tunnels and arches, colourful sponge gardens, and endemic species found nowhere else. PADI courses are offered in Portuguese, English, and French. Water temperatures range 16-24°C with best visibility (20-30m) from June to October.

Blue shark encounters are very reliable from June to October, with sightings on approximately 95% of dedicated shark dives. We drift in open water as the sharks approach.
