About this center
Alex Dive offers a unique diving experience in Egypt's Mediterranean city of Alexandria, where the underwater landscape is defined not by coral reefs but by thousands of years of submerged history. This is archaeological diving at its most compelling.
The center's primary attraction is the submerged ruins of ancient Alexandria. The Eastern Harbour holds remains of the ancient Royal Quarter, which slid into the sea during earthquakes in the 4th-8th centuries AD. Divers explore fallen columns, sphinx statues, and architectural fragments from the Ptolemaic period. The legendary Pharos Lighthouse site, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, is represented by massive stone blocks scattered across the harbor floor.
A second major site is the area around Qaitbay Citadel, where more than 2,500 artifacts have been cataloged on the seabed. These include sphinxes, statues of Isis and pharaohs, and architectural elements from temples and palaces.
Diving conditions in Alexandria are quite different from the Red Sea. Visibility is typically 3-8 meters, water is cooler (16-26°C depending on season), and currents can be strong. These conditions require competent divers who can navigate by touch and compass in limited visibility.
PADI courses are available in English, Arabic, and French. The center provides thorough historical briefings before each dive, ensuring that divers understand what they are seeing on the seabed. This is a completely unique Egyptian diving experience that appeals to history enthusiasts and divers seeking something beyond reef and wreck diving.
