About this center

Townsville's gateway to the legendary SS Yongala wreck dive, consistently ranked among the world's top ten wreck dives, with full technical diving support.

Adrenalin Dive is Townsville's premier dive operator and the gateway to one of the world's most iconic wreck dives: the SS Yongala. This PADI 5-Star Centre operates from Wickham Street in Townsville and runs regular boat trips to the SS Yongala wreck, a 109-metre passenger steamer that sank during a cyclone in 1911 and now rests in twenty-eight metres of water, creating one of the most prolific artificial reef ecosystems anywhere on the planet.

The SS Yongala consistently ranks among the top ten wreck dives in the world, and for good reason. The entire hull is encrusted with spectacular coral growth and acts as a magnet for marine life including giant Queensland groupers, bull sharks, eagle rays, sea snakes, green turtles, and dense schools of trevally and barracuda. Marble rays often rest on the sandy bottom surrounding the wreck, and during summer months, manta rays and whale sharks pass through the area. The wreck's isolation in open water means marine life concentrations are extraordinarily dense.

Adrenalin Dive also offers trips to the Great Barrier Reef and local reefs around Magnetic Island. The centre provides full technical diving support for those wanting to explore the Yongala's deeper sections, with trimix and advanced nitrox available. PADI courses from Open Water through to Divemaster are taught year-round. The boat journey to the Yongala takes approximately two hours from Townsville, with trips running weather-dependent throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What experience do I need to dive the SS Yongala?+

A minimum of Advanced Open Water certification with at least 15 logged dives is required. The wreck sits at 28 metres depth in open water with possible currents, so experience is essential for safety.

When is the best time to dive the Yongala?+

The Yongala can be dived year-round. Summer (December-March) brings warmer water and chances of manta rays and whale sharks. Winter offers better visibility but cooler temperatures around 22°C.

Can I enter the wreck?+

No, penetration of the SS Yongala is prohibited as it is a protected heritage site and maritime grave. However, the exterior is completely encrusted with coral and marine life, making external exploration spectacular.
