Phuket vs Khao Lak for Diving — Which Andaman Base Is Right for You?
Phuket and Khao Lak are the two main diving bases on Thailand's Andaman coast. Both serve as gateways to the Similan Islands and both offer liveaboard departures, but they are fundamentally different destinations with different strengths. Choosing between them depends on what kind of diving trip you want.
This is not a close contest in any single dimension — each base wins decisively in specific categories. The purpose of this guide is to make the choice clear based on your priorities: diving access, cost, atmosphere, logistics, and what you plan to do when you're not underwater.

Overview
SIMILAN ACCESS — Winner: Khao Lak Khao Lak's Tab Lamu pier is 20 minutes from town. Speedboats reach the southern Similans in 70 minutes. Phuket's Chalong Bay is 2–3 hours further from the Similans. This distance matters on day trips (more diving time, less boat time) and on liveaboards (less transit on the first and last days). If the Similans are your primary goal, Khao Lak is the objectively better base.
DAY TRIP VARIETY — Winner: Phuket Phuket offers more diverse day-trip diving: Shark Point, King Cruiser wreck, Anemone Reef, Racha Islands, Phi Phi Islands. Five distinct day-trip itineraries. Khao Lak's local diving is limited to Boonsung Wreck and Similan day trips. If you want multiple different day-trip experiences, Phuket wins.
LIVEABOARD DEPARTURES — Tie (slight edge to Khao Lak) Both are liveaboard departure points. Most Similan liveaboards depart from Khao Lak (Tab Lamu). Some extended itineraries and southern Andaman routes depart from Phuket. The selection is marginally larger from Khao Lak for standard Similan routes, but Phuket offers more variety for non-standard routes.
DIVE CENTER QUALITY — Tie (edge depends on category) Phuket has 100+ dive operators, including dedicated tec centers, freediving schools, and premium day-trip operations. The range is huge — from budget factories to world-class operations. Khao Lak has fewer operators but they're more focused: liveaboard specialists and Similan experts. For general variety and tec diving, Phuket wins. For Similan specialization, Khao Lak wins.
COSTS — Winner: Khao Lak (slightly) Accommodation in Khao Lak is generally 10–20% cheaper than equivalent quality in Phuket. Diving prices are comparable. Food is cheaper in Khao Lak. Liveaboard prices are the same regardless of departure point. The overall trip cost from Khao Lak is slightly lower.
ATMOSPHERE & NIGHTLIFE — Winner: Phuket Not even close. Phuket has international restaurants, bars, clubs, beach clubs, shopping, and entertainment for every taste. Khao Lak has quiet beach restaurants and a handful of bars. If you want things to do between dives and in the evenings, Phuket is the only option. If you want peace and quiet, Khao Lak is perfect.
LOGISTICS & TRANSPORT — Winner: Phuket Phuket has an international airport (HKT) with direct flights from most Asian hubs. Khao Lak requires a 90-minute transfer from Phuket airport — no closer airport exists. Phuket has taxis, Grab, rental scooters, and buses. Khao Lak transport is limited to taxis and hotel shuttles.
TRAINING & COURSES — Winner: Phuket More training options, more languages, more specialties including technical diving. Year-round training availability (classroom and pool work continues during monsoon). Khao Lak training options are limited and most centers close June–September.
FOR NON-DIVERS (travel companions) — Winner: Phuket Phuket has beaches, temples, Old Town, markets, cooking classes, elephant sanctuaries, and island-hopping options. Khao Lak has beautiful beaches and Khao Sok National Park nearby, but options are far more limited.
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATIONS: - Serious Similan diving (liveaboard focus): Khao Lak - Mixed diving + holiday: Phuket - Budget training + certification: Koh Tao (neither Phuket nor Khao Lak) - Technical diving: Phuket - Couples (one diver, one non-diver): Phuket - Underwater photography base: Khao Lak (Boonsung macro + Similan access) - Short trip (3–4 days): Phuket (airport convenience + day trip variety) - Dedicated dive trip (7+ days): Start Phuket (day trips), transfer to Khao Lak (liveaboard)
Who Is This For
Anyone deciding between Phuket and Khao Lak as their Andaman Sea base. Divers planning their first Thailand trip. Couples where one partner dives and one doesn't. Trip planners building multi-destination itineraries. Budget-conscious divers comparing total trip costs.
Best Season
Both operate October–May (Andaman season). Peak: January–April. Khao Lak largely shuts down June–September. Phuket remains active year-round (local sites like Racha in calm weather, training, nightlife). This is a significant advantage for Phuket if your dates fall in the monsoon shoulder months.
Safety Notes
Both locations have well-established dive industries with professional operators. Phuket has the SSS Hyperbaric Center — one of Asia's best chambers. Khao Lak relies on Phuket's chamber (90 minutes by road). Both offer DAN-affiliated operators. Choose reputable operators regardless of location — quality matters more than geography.
