Diving in Khao Lak — Similan Gateway & Liveaboard Capital

DiveOne Editorial

Khao Lak is a quiet coastal town in Phang Nga province, 80 kilometres north of Phuket, and it exists for one primary reason: it is the closest mainland base to the Similan Islands. While Phuket is the larger, louder gateway, Khao Lak is where serious Similan diving begins. The Similan departure pier at Tab Lamu is 20 minutes from town, cutting boat transfer times by 2–3 hours compared to Phuket departures. This matters when you're on a multi-day liveaboard — less transit, more diving.

Khao Lak's dive industry is smaller but more focused than Phuket's. The operators here specialise in Similan liveaboards and day trips to the outer islands. The town itself is low-key: long sandy beaches, small restaurants, and a handful of dive shops where the owners still lead trips personally. For divers who care more about underwater time than nightlife, Khao Lak is the better base.

Overview

Khao Lak serves as the launchpad for three types of diving in the Andaman Sea.

Similan Liveaboards: The primary reason most divers come to Khao Lak. Standard liveaboard itineraries (2–5 nights) depart from Tab Lamu pier and cover Islands 1–9, Koh Bon (manta cleaning station), Koh Tachai, and Richelieu Rock. Premium itineraries add the Surin Islands and sometimes the Burma Banks. Departures run from October through May, with peak season January–April. Liveaboard quality ranges from budget (shared berths, basic meals, $120/night) to premium (private cabins, photography stations, gourmet food, $250+/night).

Similan Day Trips: Speedboats from Tab Lamu can reach the southern Similan Islands (Islands 4–9) in approximately 70 minutes. These day trips typically offer 2–3 dives at the Similans, returning by late afternoon. They provide a taste of Similan diving without the liveaboard commitment, though they cannot reach Richelieu Rock or Koh Bon. Day trips cost 4,500–7,000 THB ($130–200).

Local Dive Sites: Khao Lak has a few local sites including Boonsung Wreck — a tin dredger at 18 meters that has become an artificial reef teeming with seahorses, frogfish, and ghost pipefish. It is one of Thailand's best macro dives and available as a day or half-day trip year-round (in calm conditions). Koh Bon and Koh Tachai are sometimes reachable as ambitious day trips from Khao Lak during peak season.

Dive operators in Khao Lak tend to be owner-operated and highly specialized. The two major liveaboard companies — Similan Diving Safaris and Wicked Diving — run their own boats with fixed itineraries and maintained equipment. Smaller shops offer Similan day trips and local diving. The atmosphere is professional but relaxed, without the hard-sell culture sometimes found on Phuket.

Who Is This For

Khao Lak is for divers whose primary goal is the Similan Islands and Richelieu Rock. If you want maximum underwater time at the best Andaman sites with minimal logistic overhead, Khao Lak beats Phuket. Underwater photographers base here for Boonsung Wreck macro shooting. Couples and solo divers who prefer a quiet town over Phuket's bustle also gravitate here.

Best Season

October–May, aligned with the Similan National Park opening. Peak: January–April. Boonsung Wreck is diveable year-round when weather permits. The town largely shuts down June–September during the monsoon, with most liveaboard operators suspending operations and some dive shops closing.

Safety Notes

Liveaboard safety depends on the operator. Choose boats with proper safety equipment (O2 kits, first aid, DAN emergency plan), maintained compressors, and experienced divemasters. Khao Lak's premium operators (Similan Diving Safaris, Wicked Diving) maintain high standards. Budget boats may cut corners. The nearest hyperbaric chamber is on Phuket — ensure your operator has a clear emergency evacuation plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Khao Lak or Phuket for Similan diving?
Khao Lak is closer to the Similans (70 min by speedboat vs 3+ hours from Phuket). For serious Similan access, Khao Lak is the better base. Phuket offers more entertainment and day-trip variety.
How long is a Similan liveaboard?
Standard trips are 2 nights (budget), 4 nights (standard covering Similans + Richelieu), or 5+ nights (premium adding Surin/Hin Daeng). Most divers choose 4-night itineraries.
Can I do Similans as a day trip from Khao Lak?
Yes, speedboats reach Islands 4–9 in about 70 minutes. You get 2–3 dives but cannot reach Richelieu Rock, Koh Bon, or the northern Similans. A liveaboard is recommended for the full experience.
What is there to do in Khao Lak besides diving?
Khao Lak is quiet. Long beaches, Khao Sok National Park (inland), local restaurants, and the tsunami memorial. It's a relaxation-focused destination, not a party town.
