Nitrox Diving in Thailand — Enriched Air Guide, Costs & Where to Get Certified
Nitrox (Enriched Air Nitrox, EANx) is the single most useful specialty certification a recreational diver can earn, and Thailand is an excellent place to get it. By breathing a gas mix with higher oxygen content (typically 32% or 36% O2 vs 21% in air), you extend your no-decompression limits, reduce nitrogen loading, and shorten surface intervals between dives. On a multi-dive day or a liveaboard trip, these benefits compound significantly.
In Thailand, nitrox is widely available on liveaboards and at established dive centers in Phuket, Khao Lak, and Koh Tao. The certification is simple — a half-day course covering gas analysis, MOD (Maximum Operating Depth) calculations, and oxygen toxicity risks. Once certified, you can request nitrox fills anywhere in the world.

Overview
When nitrox matters most in Thailand:
Liveaboards (3–4 dives per day): This is where nitrox delivers the biggest benefit. On a standard 4-night Similan liveaboard, you'll complete 14–16 dives in 4 days. Air diving at this pace means you're constantly pushing no-deco limits and accumulating nitrogen. On EANx 32%, your NDL at 25 meters increases from approximately 20 minutes (air) to 32 minutes — a 60% extension. This means longer bottom times, more relaxed dive plans, and less residual nitrogen fatigue.
Multi-dive day trips: A typical Phuket three-site day (Shark Point + King Cruiser + Anemone Reef) involves 3 dives in 6–7 hours. Nitrox extends your bottom time on the second and third dives when residual nitrogen from earlier dives would otherwise shorten your NDL.
Repetitive deep diving: Richelieu Rock, Hin Daeng, Chumphon Pinnacle — sites with interesting features at 25–35 meters. Nitrox significantly extends useful bottom time at these depths.
Certification details:
PADI Enriched Air Diver: The most common nitrox certification. Half-day course (3–4 hours). Theory covering: oxygen partial pressure, MOD calculation, gas analysis with an oxygen analyser, nitrox dive table or computer use, oxygen toxicity signs and management. No water dives required (though some centers include a nitrox dive). Cost: 5,000–7,000 THB ($140–200) in Phuket, 4,000–6,000 THB ($115–170) on Koh Tao.
SSI Enriched Air Nitrox: Equivalent to PADI. Free digital materials. Similar pricing.
Nitrox availability in Thailand: - Liveaboards: Most mid-range and all premium liveaboards offer nitrox. Surcharge: 200–300 THB ($6–9) per fill, or 2,000–4,000 THB ($60–115) for unlimited nitrox for the trip. Some premium boats include nitrox in the price. - Phuket dive centers: All major operators offer nitrox fills. Surcharge: 200–350 THB per tank. - Khao Lak: Available at all liveaboard-focused operators. - Koh Tao: Available at larger centers. Not all budget shops have nitrox-capable compressors.
Computer compatibility: Modern dive computers handle nitrox automatically — just set the FO2 (fraction of oxygen) before the dive. If you're renting, confirm the computer supports nitrox. Most rental computers in Thailand are nitrox-compatible.
Who Is This For
Any certified diver planning multi-dive days or a liveaboard trip. Divers over 40 (reduced nitrogen tolerance makes nitrox especially beneficial). Underwater photographers who want longer bottom times at depth. Anyone doing 3+ dives per day regularly. It is the best return-on-investment specialty in diving.
Best Season
Nitrox is relevant year-round. Get certified before your liveaboard trip — it's the single best upgrade you can add. Many divers get certified on Koh Tao (cheapest) before heading to the Andaman side for a liveaboard.
Safety Notes
Nitrox adds one primary risk: oxygen toxicity at depth. EANx 32% has a Maximum Operating Depth (MOD) of 34 meters — do not exceed this. Always analyse your tank personally before diving and set your computer to the correct FO2. Signs of oxygen toxicity: visual disturbance, ringing ears, nausea, twitching, dizziness. If any symptoms occur, ascend immediately (but safely). The nitrox course teaches all of this thoroughly.
