The reef starts shallow and slopes gradually, allowing new divers to stay within comfortable depth ranges. However, divers should be aware of occasional jet ski activity near the surface, making it important to wear a buoyancy compensator and deploy a surface marker buoy during ascent. Dive operators provide thorough briefings on local boat traffic.

The clearest water at Kenting typically occurs during the dry season from late autumn through early spring, roughly October to March, when reduced rainfall means less runoff clouding the water. However, this can vary year to year. Summer months bring warmer water and more marine life activity, including plankton blooms that reduce visibility but attract larger creatures like whale sharks and manta rays to the area.

Kenting offers numerous dive sites within easy reach of Sail Rock. Houbihu, the nuclear power plant outlet, and the Pillar Reef are all popular alternatives. Houbihu is famous for its harbour diving where sea turtles frequently rest, while the power plant warm water outlet attracts unusual species not found elsewhere. Most dive shops in the Kenting area can arrange multi-site day trips covering two to three locations along the peninsula.

The primary diving season runs from April to October, with the Kuroshio Current at its strongest influence from April to July. This period brings the warmest water temperatures, best visibility, and highest chance of pelagic encounters including whale sharks and manta rays. The summer months of July and August are popular with domestic tourists and diving can be crowded on weekends. September and October offer a good balance of warm water and fewer visitors. The winter months from November to March bring strong northeast monsoon winds that can make diving on exposed sites difficult, though the harbour itself remains sheltered. Typhoon season from July to October can occasionally shut down diving for several days at a time.
