FAQ

Is it safe to dive under the surf break?

Yes, diving at Cloud 9 Reef is safe when conditions are appropriate. Divers enter from the boardwalk side and descend to the reef flat at 5 to 8 metres before moving to deeper sections, well below the surface turbulence that creates the surf break. Local dive operators time their dives to avoid peak surf conditions and strong tidal flows. When large swells are running, the dive is moved to the sheltered eastern side of the reef. Communication with surf forecasters ensures divers and surfers coexist safely.

Can beginners dive at Cloud 9 Reef?

The site is best suited to divers with some experience due to occasional currents and the need to navigate near the surf zone. Open Water certified divers with good buoyancy control can enjoy the site during calm conditions. Local operators assess conditions daily and may redirect less experienced divers to calmer sites in the Siargao area, such as the reefs around Daku or Naked Islands where conditions are more predictable.

What else can I dive around Siargao?

Siargao offers several dive sites beyond Cloud 9 Reef. The reefs around Daku Island, Guyam Island, and Naked Island provide sheltered coral gardens suitable for all levels. The blue water between Siargao and Bucas Grande occasionally attracts whale sharks. Sohoton Cove offers unique lagoon diving through narrow rock passages. The island's eastern exposure to the Pacific means strong marine life density across all sites.
