The whale shark season in Donsol typically runs from November to June, with peak sightings between February and April when plankton concentrations are highest. During peak season, spotters on boats can locate 10 to 20 or more whale sharks in a single morning. Sightings are never guaranteed but success rates during the peak months are very high. The late season from May to June sees fewer sharks as plankton disperses.

Donsol's whale shark interaction program is primarily snorkel-based. Scuba diving is not typically used for whale shark encounters because the sharks feed at or near the surface. Visitors snorkel alongside the whale sharks from small outrigger boats with trained guides. There is a strict code of conduct including minimum distance requirements, no touching, no flash photography, and limited group sizes per shark. Nearby dive sites offer scuba diving for those wanting to explore the underwater landscape.

Donsol is notable for its strictly regulated, non-feeding model. Unlike some other whale shark tourism sites in Southeast Asia where sharks are attracted by feeding, Donsol's whale sharks arrive naturally to feed on seasonal plankton blooms. The local government and WWF established guidelines that prohibit feeding, baiting, and touching. This creates a more natural and ecologically responsible encounter, and Donsol is widely regarded as a model for sustainable whale shark tourism.
