Moyo Island was designated as a Nature Reserve (Cagar Alam) by the Indonesian government, covering approximately 6,000 hectares of land and surrounding marine areas. The reserve status restricts fishing and development, which has preserved the coral reefs in exceptional condition. Diving is permitted with coordination through local guides or dive operators who hold reserve access. The protection extends to the terrestrial environment, where the island supports populations of deer, wild boar, and numerous bird species.

Moyo Island is located off the northwest coast of Sumbawa in West Nusa Tenggara province. The nearest town is Sumbawa Besar, accessible by flights from Bali or Lombok. From Sumbawa Besar, a boat to Moyo Island takes approximately one hour. A luxury resort operates on the island and offers diving services. Alternatively, some liveaboard vessels include Moyo Island on itineraries between Bali and Komodo. Independent arrangements can be made through local fishermen in Sumbawa Besar, though advance planning is essential.

Moyo Island offers a fundamentally different diving experience from Komodo. While Komodo is known for strong currents, pelagic encounters, and adrenaline-charged drift dives, Moyo provides calm, clear waters over pristine coral gardens. The trade-off is fewer big-animal encounters but superior coral health, better visibility, and a meditative pace that Komodo's high-energy sites cannot match. Many divers who have experienced both consider Moyo a welcome complement to Komodo's intensity.
