Twins Pinnacles

Koh Tao · Surat Thani · Thailand

Twins is perhaps the dive site most synonymous with Koh Tao itself, a pair of granite pinnacles rising from a white sandy seabed just off the southern shore of Koh Nang Yuan. The site has introduced more people to diving than almost any other location in Southeast Asia, and it earns that reputation through a combination of accessibility, consistent conditions, and genuinely rewarding marine life that keeps experienced divers returning between deeper excursions. The boat anchored in the shallow channel between Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan on a still April morning. The descent along the mooring line revealed the two pinnacles immediately, dark granite masses rising from thirteen metres to within three metres of the surface, connected by a saddle of hard coral at around seven metres. The water was twenty-three metres of visibility, bathed in the pale green light characteristic of the Gulf of Thailand. I dropped to the base of the eastern pinnacle where the granite meets sand at fourteen metres. A honeycomb moray occupied a crevice at eye level, its jaw working rhythmically. Banded coral shrimp waved antennae from the same hole. Circling the pinnacle clockwise, every few metres revealed new residents. An enormous titan triggerfish guarded its territory with the aggressive posture that makes them the most genuinely dangerous fish on any Thai reef. Clouds of blue-lined snapper hung off the northern face, parting and reforming as I passed through. The saddle between the two pinnacles is where most divers spend the majority of their time. Hard coral coverage here is excellent, with staghorn, brain, and table formations creating a complex three-dimensional habitat. A resident hawksbill turtle was feeding on soft coral attached to the rock, completely unbothered by the cluster of divers photographing it. Schools of yellowtail barracuda formed a loose tornado above the saddle, catching the morning sun on their silver flanks. The western pinnacle offered macro treasures. In a small gorgonian fan at eight metres, a guide pointed out an ornate ghost pipefish, its body decorated with such elaborate appendages that it was effectively invisible until my eyes adjusted. A painted frogfish the size of a golf ball clung to a sponge nearby. These finds reward the patient observer who slows down while others chase the bigger fish. On the ascent I paused at the pinnacle top at five metres for my safety stop. A blacktip reef shark cruised past below, unhurried and indifferent. Looking up, the silhouettes of snorkellers from Koh Nang Yuan dotted the surface. The site works at every level, from the sand at fourteen metres to the shallows where light floods every crevice.

FAQ

Is Twins suitable for beginner divers and Open Water students?

Twins is one of the most beginner-friendly dive sites around Koh Tao and is regularly used for Open Water certification dives. The maximum depth is around 18 metres but most of the interesting features sit between 5 and 14 metres. Currents are typically mild, and the pinnacles provide natural orientation points that make navigation straightforward. The sheltered location behind Koh Nang Yuan means surface conditions are usually calm. Many dive schools use this site for Discover Scuba Diving experiences and Advanced Open Water deep dives.

What is the best time of year to dive Twins?

The best conditions occur from March to September when the Gulf of Thailand experiences its dry season with minimal rainfall and the best visibility, often reaching 20 to 25 metres. October to December brings monsoon weather with reduced visibility and occasionally rough surface conditions. January and February are transitional months with improving conditions. Water temperature remains warm year-round between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius so a 3-millimetre shorty or rashguard is sufficient.

How do I get to Koh Tao and how far is Twins from the island?

Koh Tao is reached by high-speed catamaran or overnight ferry from Surat Thani, Chumphon, or Koh Samui on the mainland. The crossing takes between one and a half and six hours depending on the departure point. Twins is located just off the southern tip of Koh Nang Yuan, approximately ten minutes by longtail boat from Sairee Beach on Koh Tao's west coast. Almost every dive operator on the island includes Twins in their regular rotation of sites.
